Music Partnerships

Music Partnerships

The Village School believes in fostering and maintaining links and partnerships with organisations in our community and beyond in order to assist our pupils in connecting with the world outside and to reinforce their sense of being a valued part of society. Music-making is found in all societies and indeed is believed to have existed in all prehistoric societies (Mithen, 2005). Music is not a self-contained art but relies on interaction (Small, 2011) and our links and partnerships at The Village further enrich our opportunities for interaction in music.

When linking up with our mainstream school partners we are able to make music of quality together; music can be non-academic, inclusive and accessible. We can achieve the ideal suggested by Lubet (2009) of music being inclusive in that “its goal is not therapeutic…but to enable the best musicians possible”. This frees us from the medical model of disability (identified by Oliver,1996) to seeing our children as being capable, able and intrinsically musical. When everyone is involved, says Addo (1997), knowledge grows.
